READING THE PHONE BOOK: DO YOU KNOW A JOHN SMITH?

Posted on September 3, 2010 at 7:24pm — 3 Comments

Airspeed can be predicted using a published formula. By inverting this midpoint Strouhal ratio of 0.3 (fA/U ≈ 0.3), Graham K. Taylor et al. show that as a rule of thumb, the speed of a flying animal is roughly 3 times frequency times amplitude (U ≈ 3fA).5

We now need only plug in the numbers:

U ≈ 3fA
f ≈ 15 (beats per second)
A ≈ 0.22 (meters per beat)
U ≈ 3*15*0.22 ≈ 9.9
... to estimate that the airspeed velocity of an unladen European Swallow is 10 meters per second.

DEVO.:  They released their first studio-album in 20 years last Summer (06.15.10), and it’s really fucking good.  I live in Akron, where they’re from, so, naturally, my love for them is inbred.  There are several songs from the new album in my playlist, if you’re interested.  It was really weird seeing them on Regis & Kelly (Jimmy K., Dave & Stephen Colbert, also) during the promo blitz.  xo♥ [I saw them at The Akron Civic Theater on 10.17.08 at a fundraiser for Obama, with ‘surprise’ guest appearances by The Black Keys and Chrissie Hynde of (but not with) the Pretenders.  Excellent show, throughout.  They are better than they ever were, albeit old and fat.)

Thanks, Tom!  I really like the main pic on your background.  Makes me want to go back to Tortola.

#1.)  Cool ‘synchronous-megamix’ anecdote.  I love it when things like that happen.  It makes life so much more like a movie.  I’m such a ‘no-good dreamer’ (as the shotgun-totin’ hillbilly in the episode of  The Outer-Limits I’m watching right now coincidentally just said, exactly at the moment I was groping for an appropriate phrase, thus supporting the following expansion), I should probably be brutally beaten by a gang of tone-deaf, dyslexic hicks who have never seen a movie and don’t rightly even know what one is.  Shit like that happens to me constantlyCONSTANTLY.  It’s very weird.  Just yesterday, I was reading the word ‘sextravaganza’ (a fairly rare word, especially in a non-porn context, which this was), at precisely the moment a newswoman on TV was saying the word ‘extravaganza’.  It literally gave me chills.  (...continues ... .)

#2.)  In answer to your interrogative phrase (not quite a question) “Fatty Arbuckle?”:  please go here.  If things have shifted dramatically, look for my top (most recent) caption.  HUGE Old-Guy / Comedy-Historian points for even knowing who the fuck he is, by the way (Ha-ha!).  Good To Hear From YouHave A Groovie Dayxo♥

#3.)  P.S.:  I originally saw that Pink Floyd movie in Kent, Ohio in 1980 (I think) having smoked 3 enormous joints of lime-green, purple-haired Hawaiian and having eaten a real 714 Quaalude that a beautiful mulatto (she was much hotter than Halle Berry and has been on an album-cover) gave me for my birthday after having refused to fuck me.  I managed to stay conscious but didn’t blink for about 4 hours.

#4.)  Love that Ferris Bueller music.  It made my hair stand on end and caused me to get choked-up, yet again.  You bastard.  xo♥
[Have you seen any of the shiity movies wherein Sloane (Mia Sara) is nude?  Huge, lovely nips, as I remember it -er-, ‘them’.]

I forgot to tell you how cool and hilarious your music was that last time you called it to my attention.  I immediately added “Shaving Cream” to my own playlist. That song literally makes me laugh out loud every time I hear it.  I can’t remember which one, because there were several, but one of the local Cleveland late-night horror-movie shows used to use it, so it instantly gave me happy childhood memories.  Thanks!  xo♥
